Site: Cripplegate Institute (1 memorial)

EC1, Golden Lane, 1, UBS

The plaque that can be seen in our photograph of the building reads "Cripplegate Free Library". This is the north-east corner. The foundation plaque is in a similar position on the south-east corner (towards the left of our photo), but it is impossible to take a similar long shot photograph of it because of a concrete walkway up to the Barbican Highwalk.

The activities in the Institute  were various - see A London Inheritance for further information. There we learnt that the Institute closed in 1973 and reopened as the Golden Lane Theatre. But this too closed around 1988 and the building is now (2022) office space, currently occupied by UBS.
