{On a stone plaque below the bust:}
Charles Dickens, novelist, born 1812, died 1870, lived for a time in Furnivals Inn, close to this spot and there wrote Pickwick in the year 1836. This bust was modelled & presented by Percy Fitzgerald.

Dickens lodged at Furnival's Inn while writing the first part of Pickwick Papers.
