Plaque

John Soane at Pitzhanger

Inscription

{The slate edging on one side of the drive carries this inscription:}
Famous architect John Soane created a theatrical entrance to his home, through a Roman-style triumphal arch the curved carriage drive gradually reveals Pitzhanger's elegant facade.

Site: Pitzhanger Manor (2 memorials)

W5, Mattock Lane, Pitzhanger Manor

Unusually neither of the memorials is visible in our photo of the location, but we hope you agree that the house is worthy of a picture for itself. The photo shows the view of the house which gradually revealed itself as visitors arrived via the drive (which must have had a one-way system or the theatrical effect would not have worked).

The Perceval bust is in the interior stairwell; the slate ribbon 'plaque' is running under our photographer's feet.

We've found references to the stairwell also holding a bust of Spencer Horatio Walpole, whose son, Spencer Walpole, sold Pitzhanger to Ealing Council. But if still there, we missed it.
