Bust

Rosalind Franklin tondo

Erection date: 15/3/2021

Inscription

Unveiled on 15th March 2021 by Mount Anvil, Tulip Siddiq, MP and Baroness Garden of Frognal to celebrate Rosalind Franklin and women in STEAM.
Created by Keziah Burt, the bronze tondos {sic} depicts Rosalind at the height of her career surrounded by DNA, whose double helix structure she was pivotal in discovering.

In education, first there was STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and then there was STEAM (with A for Arts) which, to us, seems to totally miss the point of STEM in the first place.

Site: Rosalind Franklin tondo (1 memorial)

NW3, Kidderpore Avenue, Rosalind Franklin building, on Hampstead Manor

The developers have chosen to name one of their buildings on this ex-Westfield College site 'Rosalind Franklin' and to erect this memorial, but the site has no association with Franklin. This site was not even part of King's College at the time that Franklin, researching at King's, worked on DNA.  Her historic photographic work was carried out at the Strand site.  The Ham and High has this quote which provides another, much weaker, association with the area: "Younger sister Jenifer Glynn said that while Franklin never worked at Westfield College, their parents lived nearby on Hocroft Road at the time she took Photo 51."
