William Gilpin 1724 - 1804
These flats have been built on the site of Cheam School. From 1752 - 1777, William Gilpin, satirised by William Combe and Rowlandson as Dr Syntax because of his interest in the picturesque landscape, was headmaster. He was also a water colourist and educationla reformer.
