Categories: Craft / Design, Food & Drink

Countries: Ireland

Floral artist. Born Constance Fletcher at 58 Warner Street, Derby. Educated in Ireland, she returned to England during WW1 as a welfare worker in the east end of London. Her work with flowers did not begin until she was in her forties, and her floral designs broke with the formal conventions of the day. In 1947 she was commissioned to supervise the flowers for the marriage of the future Queen Elizabeth II. She became joint Principal of the Cordon Bleu Cookery School and was credited with inventing the 'Coronation Chicken' dish in 1953. Died at Winkfield Place, near Windsor.
