Valuation surveyor involved in the creation of Burgess Park. He was piloting a Cessna 172 light aircraft when it crashed in a field near Biggin Hill Airfield, Kent. Three colleagues from work were also killed: David Ashmore, Adrian Brunswick and Michael Norton. It's not clear whether the flight was connected with their work on Burgess Park (to take aerial photos of the Park?) or if it was a pleasure flight taken by a group of friends who knew each other through work.
At the time of his death Mills was living at Old Road, SE13, single, aged 20-30. See Geoffrey Mills for details.
At the Landscape Institute we discover that an annual award was created: "The annual award is supported by a fund set up in memory of David Ashmore, Adrian Brunswick and Michael Norton, three landscape architects who were tragically killed in an air crash at Biggin Hill on 13 January 1979. A legacy was added to the fund on the death of Mary Mitchell in December 1988." We surmise that Mary Mitchell may have been the maternal grandmother of one of the dead.
Andrew Behan has researched this man: Geoffrey Raymond Mills was born on 21 January 1952. His birth was registered in Lewisham and the maiden surname of his mother was Ward. He died, aged 26 years, on 13 January 1979 in an air crash at Biggin Hill, Bromley. He was cremated on 19 January 1979 in Lewisham. Probate records show that his home address had been 71 Old Road, Lewisham and he was listed in telephone directories at this address from 1976. His estate totalled £22,810.
