Charlotte Anne Johnston

She was born as Charlotte Anne Trevelyan on 1 August 1836 in Malden, Surrey, the eldest of the four children of The Reverend George Trevelyan (1802-1850) and Anne Trevelyan née Gosse (1814-1867). She was baptised in the Parish of Malden on 19 September 1836 where the baptismal register confirms that her father was a clerk. Her siblings were: Walter Henry Trevelyan (1840-1884), Julia Louisa Trevelyan (1846-1887) and George Edward Trevelyan (1848-1915).

In the 1851 census she is shown as a pupil, boarding at her school, Aubrey House, Camden Hill Square, Notting Hill, which was run by sisters Emma and Caroline Shepheard.

On 14 September 1858 she married Andrew Johnston (1835-1922) at St Martin's Church, Church Street, Epsom, Surrey, where the marriage register shows her as a spinster residing in Epsom and her husband as a merchant from the parish of All Hallows the Great in the City of London. They had one child, Beatrice Priscilla Johnston, who was born in 1860 and who unfortunately died in infancy, aged 2 years, in 1862.

The 1861 census shows her living at The Mount, Oatlands Park, Walton on Thames, Surrey, with her husband, their daughter Beatrice Priscilla Johnston, a nurse, a cook, an undernurse and a parlour-maid. Her husband was described as an iron merchant in London.

In the 1871 census she is shown as living at 16 Albert Mansions, Victoria Street, Westminster, with her husband, who was listed as a Member of Parliament, and her sister in law - Priscilla Hannah Johnston (1842-1912), together with a lady's maid. The 1891 census shows her living at Forest Lodge, Prospect Lane, Woodford, Essex, with her husband, who was described as the chairman of both Essex County Council and of an ironmonger company, together with a cook and a housemaid.

Probate records confirm that she died, aged 84 years, on 29 July 1921 and that her address had been Forest Lodge, Woodford Green, Essex. Probate was granted on 18 November 1921 to her husband and her effects totalled £5,459-5s-3d. Her death was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1921 in the West Ham registration district, Essex.
