Author and Shakespearian scholar. Born in Enfield, at the school run by his father, Reverend John Clarke.

John Keats was a pupil at the school for about 7 years (1803-10). Charles taught him and encouraged his literary ambitions.

Went into a music publishing partnership with Alfred Novello (1810–96) and, 1828, married Mary Novello (1809–98) both children of Vincent Novello. Charles and Mary knew many of the important literary people of the time,  and both wrote on Shakespeare and other literary subjects, often in collaboration.
