Botanist and biologist - a leading authority in her field, her research spanning the disciplines of science, history and philosophy. She published many books and scientific papers, in particular 'Herbals, Their Origin and Evolution'. In 1946 she became only the third woman, and the first female botanist, to be elected to the fellowship of the Royal Society, and in 1948 became the first woman to be awarded the Linnaean Medal.
