Alf Ramsey

Football player and manager. Born Alfred Ernest Ramsey in Dagenham. He played for Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and the England teams before becoming manager of Ipswich Town. He was appointed manager of the England team in 1962, and caused a stir when he predicted that they would win the next World Cup in 1966 - a prophecy that was to become the pinnacle of his career. Knighted in 1970. Died at 248 Sidegate Lane, Ipswich.
