Anti-Slavery Society

Group

First founded in Britain in 1823 as the 'Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions'. When slavery was abolished in British dominions the Society was refounded in 1839 as the 'British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society' to fight slavery in other nations.

A precursor was the The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, of which Thomas Clarkson was a founding member.
