Avnish Ramanbhai Patel was born on 2 May 1973 in Lambeth and lived with his parents in Clapham until he was 11 years old when he prevailed upon his parents to allow him to live with an uncle in Connecticut, USA.

He graduated from New York University and lived in the city.

He was a financial analyst working for Fred Alger Management and it was whilst working in their offices on Floor 93, North Tower, 1 World Trade Centre, Manhattan, New York, USA that he died, aged 28 years, on 11 September 2001.
