Charles Clement Walker

Andrew Behan has very kindly done some solid work on Walker in the census returns and at ancestry.co.uk.  From this we can say: Walker was born 1822 in Clerkenwell probably in Sutton Street (now Northburgh Street) where his parents Charles, a smith, and Agnes, were living.  In 1853, in Clerkenwell, he married Katharina Endres, who had been born in Prussia.   By age 48 he was a civil engineer employing 360 men and 40 boys, living at Lilleshall Old Hall, Newport, Shropshire, with his wife, 2 female domestic servants and a groom who was blind in one eye.  Age 58 he had become a JP, was still living at Lilleshall and had a few more servants.  He died there aged 74 with an estate of £129,712 which, using RPI, is over £12 million in today’s terms, a wealthy man.  Note: no children were mentioned in the census returns.
