Known professionally as Devon Russell, he was a Jamaican rocksteady and reggae singer and record producer who recorded between the 1960s and the 1990s, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Tartans and Cultural Roots.
Devon Barrant Russell was born on 6 August 1948 in Kingston, Jamaica, the son of Benjamin Russell (b.1912) and Adeline Russell née Young (1931-1984).
On 12 February 1987 he married Arden L. Fyffe in the Hackney registration district, Greater London and they had two daughters: Kiesha Quasheba G. Russell (b.1987) and Akilah Nefertiti Russell (b.1989).
His Wikipedia page confirms that he died from a brain tumour, aged 48 years, on 18 June 1997. His death was registered in the Westminster registration district, Greater London.
He is shown as Devon Russell on the Mellow Mix Studios plaque on the Hackney Picture House, Mare Street, London, E8.
