Née Balducci. 2015: Via Facebook Brian Townsley writes: “I have been trying to find a bit more about the Vautro family because there were three Vautro sisters (?) who were famous racing cyclists in the 1890's. But all that I can add is that Robert Vautro (1908-1944) married Doris May Balducci in 1934 in the Finsbury District of London. Robert is thought to be the youngest child with the eldest one - Melanie Anne Vautro ("Beany") being born in 1878 at Montlucon, France.” This prompted us to find this page, which gives pictures of Fanoche, Marcelle and Beany.
The Doris for whom the tree was planted was certainly the right age to marry Robert Vautro in 1934 so we think this is the lady, sister-in-law to some famous female cyclists.
2018: Andrew Behan has kindly researched this lady: He points out that the information varies slightly from the comments from Brian Townsley in 2015. Her middle name would appear to have been Mary, not May and the marriage to Robert Vautro took place in Finsbury in the first quarter of 1938, not 1934.
Doris Mary Balducci was born on 25 July 1910, the elder daughter of Angelo Balducci and Ada Balducci, née Cherrington, and the birth was registered in West Ham. When her father died in 1918 the family were living at 5 Redclyffe Road, East Ham. By the following year the family had moved to 9 Northampton Road, London, E.C.1. Her widowed mother remarried in 1928 in Holborn to an Alfred H Tyler. She married Robert Vautro in early 1938 in Finsbury.
The 1939 register that was compiled at the outbreak of World War 2 for the issue of National Identity Cards shows her living with her husband, mother and stepfather at 14 Benjamin Street, E.C.1. Her occupation was shown as a Coil Winder and her husband was a Wine Waiter. Her mother was a Leather Stitcher and her stepfather was a Boat Repairer. Their daughter, June D Vautro, was born in 1941. Robert Vautro died in Islington in 1944 and by 1947 she was living with her daughter, mother and stepfather at 17 Benjamin Street, E.C.1. Her mother died in 1959. In about 1964 she, together with her daughter and stepfather, moved to 9 Sadler House, Spa Green Estate, Rosebery Avenue, E.C.1, where she remained until she died on 7 June 1979. She was cremated in Islington on 13 June 1979. Probate was granted and her estate totalled £1,173.
