Private Frank Mathews. Born on the 19th November 1884 in Chelsea, the son of John Charles and Ellen Mathews, née Miller. His father was a Railway Signalman. On the 5th December 1889 he, together with an older brother - John William Mathews, was baptised at the Christ Church Mission, College Park, Kensal Green. The family were living at this time at 6 Station Road, Willesden. The 1891 census shows the family living at 6 Chamberlain Terrace, Station Road, Willesden. In addition to his parents he was living with five brothers, Frederick, aged 15; George, aged 14; Charles, aged 12; John William, aged 9; Richard Montague, aged 2 and three sisters, Edith, aged 17; Louisa, aged 10 and Ethel G aged 4. The 1901 census shows the family living at 6 Chamberlayne Wood Road, Willesden and his occupation was given as Lamp Shade Maker. In April 1911 he was appointed as a Postman in Battersea and the census of that year shows he was boarding with a family called Stoner at 102 Russell Road, Wimbledon. In February 1912 he was appointed as a Porter at the London Western District Office. At some point he joined the army, enlisting in Newbury, Berkshire and it was as a soldier he married Lillian Gertrude Edgell at St. Matthew’s Church in Willesden on the 13th June 1917. His address was shown as 26 Bellevue Road, Ealing and she was living at 7d Brownlow Road, Willesden. It was whilst he was serving in the 1st Battalion of The Princess Charlotte of Wales’s Royal Berkshire Regiment, service number 7605, that he was Killed in Action, aged 33 years, on the 26th March 1918 and as he has no known grave he is commemorated on Bay 7 of The Arras Memorial, France. On the 12th June 1918 his widow, who was living at 42 Westover Road, Harlesden, was given his back pay and effects amounting to £29-2s-11d and on the 19th July 1919 she was given a £17-0s-0d War Gratuity. He was posthumously awarded The British War Medal, 1914-1918 and The Victory Medal.
