George Jarratt, VC

War dead, WW1 i

Commemorated on a memorial as having died in WW1.

Born and brought up in Kennington, he worked as a junior clerk in Beefeater's gin distillery. He had been living in Southgate with his wife Gertrude and baby daughter Joyce.

Corporal George Jarratt, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) was a prisoner in a dugout with some wounded men. The citation reads "A grenade fell in the dugout, and without hesitation Cpl. Jarratt placed both feet on the grenade, the subsequent explosion blowing off both his legs. The wounded were later safely removed to our lines, but Cpl. Jarratt died before he could be removed. By this supreme act of self-sacrifice the lives of these wounded were saved." So killed by what we now call "friendly fire". More information at Royal Fusiliers and Great War Forum.
