George Joseph Levy was born on 25 May 1927, the younger of the two children of Percy Philip Levy (1892-1964) and Maude Agnes Levy née Simmons (1900-1991). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1927 in the Hampstead registration district and his elder sister was Agnes Pamela Levy (1921-1984). His father was theatrical costumier.

From 1927 to 1935 his parents were shown on the electoral rolls as living at 3 Lymington Road, Hampstead and from 1936 at 7 Greenaway Gardens, Hampstead.

He married Wendy Yetta Blairman (1923-2006) on 18 December 1952 in the Hampstead registration district and they had three children: Martin L. Levy (b.1954), Caroline R. Levy (b.1957) and Gillian M. Levy (b.1961). Telephone directories and electoral rolls show that they lived from 1954 to 1957 at Flat 7, 51 Fitzjohn's Avenue, London, NW3 and from 1959 to 1965 at 27 Oakhill Avenue, London, NW3.

As the Chairman of The Friends of the Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood. (1978-1996) he was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, (MBE), in the 1992 New Year Honours List. He was also the Chairman of the British Antique Dealers' Association (1974-1976) and Chairman of the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair (1980-1982).

He died, aged 69 years, on 1 September 1996, his death being registered in the Westminster registration district. His obituary in The Independent newspaper gives much information about the man.
