Gladys Itzinger

Victim of the Druid Street arch bomb, aged 7.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan had kindly researched this child: Gladys Victoria Itzinger was born about 1933, a daughter and one of the four children of William Richard Itzinger (1897-1976) and May Beatrice Itzinger née Bridger (1899-1974). Her birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1933 as Gladys V Stzinger in the St Olave District (Bermondsey) register office. Electoral registers from 1929 show that the family were living at 142 Abbey Street, Bermondsey. She died, aged 7 years, on 25 October 1940 whilst sheltering in the Druid Street Billiard Hall bomb shelter. She was buried in Southwark on 5 November 1940. She is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London.
