Athlete. Born Douglas Alastair Gordon Pirie at 123 Beckett Street, Leeds. BBC sports personality of the year in 1955, when he out-ran the triple gold medallist Emil Zatopek. He broke five world records in the course of his career. Winner of a silver medal for the 5000 metres at the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956, and a bronze in the 5000 metres at the 1958 European Championships in Stockholm. Died at the Oakhaven Nursing Home, Lower Pennington Lane, Lymington.
