Guild and School of Handicraft

Categories: Craft / Design

Founded by C. R. Ashbee together with an evening school. Initially opened in Toynbee Hall then moved to the the top floor of the next-door warehouse, 34 Commercial Street.  In 1890-1 the workshops/classrooms were moved to Essex House and a shop selling the work was established in Brook Street and Bond Street Mayfair (which says a lot about their target customers).

The school had closed by 1895 but it inspired the Central School of Arts and Crafts, which the LCC opened the next year. But by 1900 the Guild was employing about forty men and in 1902 the Essex Road lease ran out so the Guild moved to Chipping Camden. However, partly as a result of the move, it folded in 1907/8.

Utopia Britannica is a good source.
