Born in Victoria Barracks, Windsor. He was an acting lieutenant colonel in the 9th battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. On 23rd October 1918 at Ovillers, France, his battalion's advance was checked by enemy machine-gun fire. He single-handedly rushed the position and killed the crew.
