War dead, WW1 i

Commemorated on a memorial as having died in WW1.

He was a second  patrol lieutenant in the 5th Dragoon Guards during the Second Boer War. On the 30th October 1899 he took out from Ladysmith a small patrol of the 5th Dragoon Guards. They came under heavy enemy fire and retired at full speed. One of the patrol dropped and Norwood galloped back through heavy fire. He picked up the fallen trooper and carried him away from the fire.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for this deed.

He was later promoted to the rank of captain and posted to France where he was killed, on his birthday, during the first Battle of the Marne at Sabionnieres.
