King Edmund II, Ironside

Categories: Armed Forces, Royalty

King of England, also known as Edmund Ironside. Born c.990. Became king after the deaths of his two elder brothers, although at the same time, the Danish Canute was chosen as king by opposition factions. Edmund fought five battles against the Danes, drove them across the Thames at the 1016 Battle of Brentford but was eventually beaten at the Battle of Assandun (unknown location - probably in Essex). The kingdom was divided, with Edmund taking Wessex. He died shortly afterwards leaving Canute as sole ruler.
