Ladywell (Village) Society

Categories: Community / Clubs

We are grateful to Mike Keogh for giving us (via Facebook) some history of this society: Founded in 1984 by Robert Smith as the Ladywell Village Society, by 2015 it has been renamed the Ladywell Society. After a number of Chairs, including Keogh, Smith, now retired, has taken on the Chair again and, subject to committee approval, the Society will revert to its original name. The Ladywell Village Improvement Group is a separate organisation, liaising with Lewisham Council to improve the streetscape and business community connections.

It’s local organisations like this that we have to thank for many of the plaques and other memorials that we collect. They also are responsible for protecting heritage that might otherwise be lost, and for encouraging the maintenance and improvement of both the physical and social fabric of local life. With all that said we’re sure Mike and Robert will forgive us for saying that the story of the name of their society reminds us of Monty Python’s dispute concerning “The Judean People's Front” vs “The People's Front of Judea”.
