Lieutenant Christopher Fothergill Robinson

Christopher Fothergill Robinson was born 1 December 1909 in Lincoln, Ontario, Canada, the fourth of the five children of Richmond Fothergill Robinson (1879-1915) and Mabel Gertrude Robinson née Singleton (1881-1961).

His four siblings were: Evelyn Mary Fothergill Robinson (1902-1977); George Fothergill Robinson; Richmond Fothergill Robinson (1907-1970) and Iona Margaret Fothergill Robinson (1911-1987).

In the 1911 census he was shown as aged 1 year and living at 146 Vine Street, St Catharines, Ontario, with his parents and his four siblings.

His father was killed in action, aged 35 years, on 30 July 1915 whilst serving as a Second Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps, in Belgium.

Electoral registers in 1937 show him listed at Flat 2, 2/3 Westbourne Grove Terrace, London, W2, with his widowed mother and two of his siblings: Iona Margaret Fothergill Robinson and Richard Fothergill Robinson.

He was serving as a Lieutenant in the 60th Battery, 23rd Field Regiment, Royal Artillery, service number 190360, when he died, aged 32 years, on 3 November 1942. His death was registered in the 4th quarter of 1942 in the Newton Abbot Registration District, Devon and his body was buried in Section 2, Grave R 28, in the Harpenden (Westfield) Cemetery, Westfield Road, Harpenden, Hertfordshire.

Probate records show his address to have been Ayres End House, Harpenden and confirmed that he had died on war service. Probate was originally granted on 15 April 1943 to his mother and his effects totalled £4,120-10s-8d, but on 24 November 1961 administration of his estate was re-granted jointly to: his sister, Iona Margaret Fothergill Palmer; Charles Montague Andreae, a stockbroker and to Thomas Murray Mills, a solicitor. His effects now totalled £1,138-19s-7d.

He is shown as 'ROBINSON, CHRISTOPHER F.' on the Lloyd's of London WW2 memorial at 12 Leadenhall Street, London, EC3V 1LP. He is also commemorated on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's website.
