Actor and theatre manager. Born Nigel Ross Playfair in London. In 1918 he formed a syndicate to take over the derelict Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith. It became a highly successful drama venue, with Playfair appearing in many of its productions. Knighted in 1928. Fortnum and Mason still sell Sir Nigel's vintage marmalade which was produced especially for him. Died King's College Hospital, London.
