She came to London from Jamaica as a young girl and lived, initially with her mother, in Stockwell, her home for the rest of her life. She had a variety of careers, the final one being in the health service which ended when she retired as Director of Human Resources at The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). She was also treasurer of the Brixton Society for 16 years and did other voluntary work, with Age UK and others.
