Born in Manchester as Margaret Christian Garnett, great niece of Samuel Palmer. Aged about 6 her family moved to Hampstead. 1934-67 Labour member of the LCC/GLC. Married Douglas Jay (who had literally been the boy next door) in 1933; divorced 1972. Was Chair and then President of the Heath & Old Hampstead Society.
