Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence

On his 28th birthday the eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales (Edward and Alexandra) and so second in line to the throne, fell ill at his home at Sandringham. He died on 14 January 1892 after a violent bout of influenza.

Born 3 years after the death of Prince Albert, the Queen's consort, he was christened Albert but was always known as Eddy. Despite not being at all scholarly he was the first prince to attend university, Cambridge. He managed to fall in love with a number of unsuitable women and also to have skirted around the, then illegal, homosexual scene.

Just a month before his death he had become engaged to his parents' choice of bride, Mary of Teck. 18 months later she married Eddy's brother, George and they went on to became George V and Queen Mary.

The picture source website lays out the theory that Eddy could have been Jack the Ripper.
