Royal Brass Foundry

Categories: Armed Forces, Engineering

The Woolwich riverfront had been used as a dockyard and arms store for decades so having the foundry here made sense. It's construction was in response to a fatal explosion at Bagley's Foundry, just north of the City.

In addition to its obvious casting functions, the new Royal Brass Foundry also originally held a vertical cannon boring machine used to finish the bore of cannons, which at the time were cast with a core. The foundry was allowed to decline over time.
