Samuel Kitching Ellison MRCS

Samuel Kitching Ellison was born in 1813 in Skipton, Yorkshire, the fifth of the eight children of James Ellison (c.1781-1851) and Arabella Ellison née Kitching (c.1781-1866). Baptismal records show that he was baptised on 18 July 1813 in Skipton-in Craven (an alternative name for Skipton).

On 7 August 1837 he married Maria Clarissa Quadling (1819-1842) at Holy Trinity Church in the Liberty of the Tower of London, where in the marriage register he is shown as of full age, a bachelor and a surgeon residing in Mile End Road, London, and that his father was a farmer, whilst his wife was described as a minor and a spinster living in Devonshire Street, the daughter of John Quadling, a superintendent at St Catherine's Docks. The birth of their son, Samuel Kitching Ellison (1839-1897) was registered in the 4th quarter of 1839 in the Stepney Registration District, Middlesex (now Greater London).

In the 1841 census he was shown as Samuel K. Ellison, a surgeon living at 4 Clarendon Square, St Pancras, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his wife and their son.

His wife died and was buried on 23 October 1842 at St John the Baptist's Church, Hoxton, Middlesex (now Greater London) where in the burial register the family were shown as living at Wellington Place, Hoxton.

In the 1851 census he was listed as Ellison, S. K., aged 36 years, a widower and Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), living at 22 High Street, Poplar, Middlesex (now Greater London), with his son and a widowed female house servant.

On 8 September 1851 he married Mary Ann Shadrack (1830-1911) at St John's Church, Hackney, Middlesex (now Greater London), where he is described in the marriage register as of full age, a widower and surgeon residing at Mare Street, Hackney, whilst his wife was shown as of full age and a spinster also living at Mare Street, the daughter of Thomas Shadrack, a licenced victualler.

On 26 September 1860 he was commissioned as an Honorary Assistant Surgeon in the 1st Tower Hamlets Artillery Volunteer Corps.

When the 1861 census was undertaken he was shown as Samuel K. Ellison, aged 47 years and a MRCS and general practitioner, residing at 94 East India Road, Poplar, London, with his 30-year-old wife, four children: Samuel K. Ellison, aged 22 years, who was listed as a medical student; Frederick William Ellison (1854-1896) - a scholar; Ada Mary Ann Ellison (1856-1891) - a scholar and Annie Kitching Ellison (1859-1943), together with a female general servant.

He was still living at 94 East India Road, Poplar, at the time of the 1871 census where he was shown as aged 57 years and surgeon. Also at his home were his wife and five children: Frederick William Ellison who was described as a tea merchant's clerk; Ada Mary Ann Ellison - a scholar: Annie Kitching Ellison - a scholar; Grace Helena Ellison (1866-1946) - a scholar and Edith May Ellison (b.1869), together with two female domestic servants.

His death was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1877, aged 64 years, in the Poplar Registration District, Middlesex, and probate records confirm that he died on 24 September 1877 at 94 East India Road, Poplar, and that his will was proved at the Principal Registry in London by Mary Ann Shadrack, a spinster of 94 East India Road, Poplar and John Poulter of 9 Barnett Terrace, Colworth Road, Leytonstone, Essex (now Greater London), a commercial clerk. His effects were initially listed as under £800, but were resworn in June 1879 as under £1,500.

He is shown a 'S. K. ELLISON.' one of two churchwardens on the Newby Place graveyard memorial at Newby Place, London, E14.
