Building    From 1903

Shepherd's Bush Empire

Theatre. Built for impresario Oswald Stoll and designed by Frank Matcham. Amongst its first performers were the Fred Karno troupe featuring Charlie Chaplin. When the appeal of variety shows began to wane, it was sold to the BBC in 1953 and renamed The BBC Television Theatre. Many popular programmes such as That's Life, The Generation Game and Juke Box Jury were produced here. The BBC vacated it in 1991 and it has since reopened as a music venue under its original name.
