Simon Giles Atlee was born on 4 May 1971 according to The Times website. He was the younger child of Stephen Richard Atlee (1946-2018) and Christine P. Atlee née Audritt (b.1947), his birth being registered in the 2nd quarter of 1971 in the Redbridge Registration District, Greater London. His elder sister was Geraldine Clare Atlee (b.1968).
On 1 October 1999 he was, as a photographer, appointed as a director of Four Aden Grove Limited that traded at 4b Aden Grove, London, N16 9NJ.
The Times website reports that he was a fashion photographer from Stoke Newington, London, who had spent Christmas Day planning his wedding with his Czech supermodel girlfriend Petra Nemcova at the Orchid Beach resort in Khao Lak, Thailand. The following morning, 26 December 2004, the giant wave swept through their beach bungalow and Mr Atlee was never seen alive again. He was aged 33 years. Miss Nemcova survived.
The Find a Grave website, which (in 2025) incorrectly shows his date of birth as 6 October 1971, states that at first he was presumed missing, but his body was found and identified on 3 March 2005, on the shores of Sumatra and was later cremated.
He is shown as 'Simon Atlee' on the Tsunami memorial in the Darwin Centre Garden, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7.
