Thomas Henry Thrower

Categories: Tragedy

Thomas Henry Thrower was born on 30 December 1915 at 35 Eagle Wharf Road, Hoxton, London, the sixth of the eight children of Frederick Thrower (1882-1963) and Alice Maud Thrower née Stubbings (1884-1928). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1916 in the Shoreditch Registration District, London. On 12 April 1917 he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Hoxton, 19 Bletchley Street, London, N1, where in the baptismal registers his family were shown to be living at 120 Shepherdess Walk, Hoxton and that his father was described as a soldier.

His seven siblings were: Alice Eliza Thrower (1907-1919); Frederick Joseph William Thrower (1909-1988); Louisa Mary Thrower (1911-1915); Joseph James Thrower (1913-1999); Lilian Violet Thrower (1914-1924); Arthur Thrower (b.1920) and Leonard Thrower (1922-2011).

In the 1921 census he is shown as aged 5 years, 6 months and in whole-time education. He was living in three rooms at 14 Queens Cottages, Popham Street, Islington, London, with his parents and his four surviving siblings: Frederick Joseph William Thrower; Joseph James Thrower; Lilian Violet Thrower and Arthur Thrower. His father described himself as a cooper employed by the proprietors of Hays Wharf & Dock, Tooley Street, Southwark, London.

Electoral registers in 1928 show his family listed at 102 Hungerford Road, Lower Holloway. London, N7 and from 1929 at 29 Albany Cottages, Popham Street, Islington.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register he is shown as a dairy labourer living in the home of Jane M. Swan, a widow and her family consisting of two sons and three daughters, including Frances Ellen Swan (1910-1978) - a jewel case coverer, at 54 Britannia Row, Islington.

On 26 June 1940 he married Francis Helen Swan at St James the Apostle Church, Islington, where in the marriage register he is shown as aged 24 years, a bachelor and a dairy worker, living at 54 Britannia Row, London, N1, the son of Frederick Thrower, a warehouseman, whilst his wife was described as aged 29 years, a spinster and a jewel case coverer, also residing at 54 Britannia Row, the daughter of Albert Swan, deceased. His wife seems to have used various middle names: Ellina in the 1921 census, Ellen and Helen in other records.

They had two children: Kenneth Stanley Thrower (1942-2019) and Peter L. Thrower (b.1944).

Electoral registers from 1945 to 1947 show him listed at 93 Riversdale Road, London, N5, the home of his in-laws, but from 1954 the registers show him and his wife residing 92 Aubert Court, Avenell Road, London, N5.

He was killed, aged 59 years, on 28 February 1975 in the Moorgate tube disaster. His death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1975 in the London City Registration District and his body was buried on 10 March 1975 in the London Borough of Islington

Probate records confirm his address remained as 92 Aubert Court, Avenell Road, London, N5, but shows his date of death as 4 March 1975, which was probably when his body was recovered and his death certified. Administration of his estate was granted on 17 July 1975 and his effects totalled £5,730.

He is shown as 'THROWER, THOMAS' on the Moorgate tube disaster memorial in Finsbury Square, London, EC2.
