Eleanor Winifred Hartman was born on 9 December 1907, the youngest of the nine children of Peter Hartman née Hartmann (1860-1944) and Katherine Hartman née Catherine Gutheil (1864-1941).
She was baptised on 14 June 1910 at St Anne's Church, Hoxton. The baptismal records show that the family lived at 5 Great James Street, Shoreditch and that her father was a baker.
The 1911 census confirms her living at 5 Great James Street, Hoxton, with her parents and five elder brothers.
In the electoral registers from 1933 to 1937 she is listed as Winifred Eleanor Hartman at 5 Great James Street whilst on the 1939 England and Wales Register she is recorded as Winiefred Hartman at 5 Purcell Street, Shoreditch, with her parents. Her occupation is shown as a down quilt presser.
Both she and her mother were killed at 5 Purcell Street as a result of German air raid on 11 May 1941. She was aged 33 years and was was buried with her mother on 16 May 1941 at Chingford Mount Cemetery, 121 Old Church Street, London, E4 6ST. Their headstone was erected on 22 June 1942.
Administration of her estate was granted to her father on 9 September 1941 and probate records show her effects totalled £151-5s-2d.
Both she and her mother are also commemorated on the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
