William Alexander Robertson

Elder brother to Laurance Grant and Norman Cairns. Left a lot of money in his will to the National Trust to commemorate his brothers. The money was used to buy Sutton House and eight areas of countryside within reach of London. William stated that at each site a memorial must be erected, specified as to size and form, giving its location and details of his brothers.

These memorials are to be found at:
Netley Park, Gomshall, Surrey;
Frensham Common near Farnham, Surrey;
Highcombe Copse, near the Devil's Punchbowl to the west of Hindhead, Surrey;
Hydon's Ball on Hydon's Heath, close to Octavia Hill seat, Surrey;
Toy's Hill, Weardale, Kent;
Micheldene - cliff top between Burling Gap and Cuckmere Haven, East Sussex;
Robertson Corner on Dunstable Downs, junction B4541 and Isle of Wight Lane, Bedfordshire;
Sharpenhoe Clappers, near Barton-le-Clay, Bedfordshire.

That would make a good challenge for a walker - to collect them all: plot them on a map and send us the photos - we'll extend "London" to include them.

2019: James I. M. Robertson took us up on the challenge and, a year later, sent the attached composite photo to prove his achievement. Excellent work James.
