William Behnes

Born London but brought up in Dublin. Very successful and prolific sculptor but he was a difficult man with "evil habits" (which seem to have been mainly liquid) and never achieved membership of the Royal Academy. His brother Henry, also a sculptor changed his name to Burlowe to avoid the "tarnish of the name". Bankrupt he moved to 72 Charlotte Street and was found one night "in the gutter with threepence in his pocket". He was taken to Middlesex Hospital where he died.
