William Lutley Sclater was born on 23 September 1863 and his birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1863 in the St George's, Hanover Square registration district in London.  He was the eldest of the six children of Philip Lutley Sclater (1829-1913) and Jane Ann Eliza Sclater née Hunter-Blair (1835-1915). He was baptised on 20 November 1863 at All Saint's Church, Marylebone.

On 1 February 1896 he married an American divorcée, Charlotte Seymour Stephenson née Mellen (1859-1942) at the parish church of St George's, Hanover Square, London, although the marriage register describes her 'condition' as single and unmarried.

Probate records confirm that his wife, of 10 Sloane Court, Chelsea, died, aged 82 years, on 7 January 1942 at Tilecotes, Oxford Road, Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire and when probate was granted to husband who was described as a retired museum director, her effects totalled £489-1s-2d.

He died, aged 80 years, as a result of enemy action when a V1 bomb fell on his home at 10 Sloane Court, Chelsea, on 3 July 1944 and he died the following day a St George's Hospital, Hyde Park Corner, Westminster.

When probate was granted on 9 November 1944, his estate totalled £9,173-4s-6d. He is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London.
