Winifred Gertrude Maton

Andrew Behan has kindly provided the following research: Winifred Gertrude Maton was born as Winifred Gertrude Gudgeon on 10 September 1914 in Chelsea. She was the daughter of Mr & Mrs William Charles Gudgeon. Her mother's maiden name was Farrington. In 1938 she married Cyril Ralph Maton (1912-1992) and the marriage was registered in Surrey North East District and their son, Brian K. Maton, was born later that year. The 1939 England and Wales Register shows her at 66 Park Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, with her father and son. Her husband was still registered at his old address of 102 New Street, Andover, Hampshire. His occupation was shown as a Engineer Fitter and Turner whilst her father's occupation was given as a Motor Driver and Fitter.

She was killed at home by enemy action, aged 30 years, on 22 January 1945 at 2.35pm when the last V2 rocket to fall in Kingston exploded. The Burial Register of Kingston Council's Kingston Cemetery at Bonner Hill Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 3EZ, shows that she was buried at 11.15am on 27 January 1945 in the Roman Catholic consecrated section of Kingston Cemetery in Plot C, Grave 43. She is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London.
