Plaque

Coroner's Court, Westminster - foundation

Erection date: 2/6/1893

Inscription

{On a stone at the lower left of the building:}
This stone was laid June 2nd 1893, by His Grace the Duke of Westminster, KG, who presented the ground upon which this mortuary was erected by the united Vestries of St Margaret and St John the Evangelist, Westminster.
T. Horn C.E. - Chairman of the Joint Works and Sanitary Committee
G. R. W. Wheeler AMICE - architect and surveyor
J. E. Smith – Vestry Clerk
N. Lidstone - Builder

Thrust into a corner of the facade and hidden by a bay tree this plaque has taken 3 visits to reveal all its lettering. And it is not a plaque to be proud of: as you can see in our photo (actually a video grab) the centring of the text goes awry, and the last letter of one line had to be carved on the adjacent stone.

Site: Coroner's Court (2 memorials)

SW1, Horseferry Road, 65

The listing entry includes : "... an early example of Arts and Crafts freely-handled neo-Georgian-Jacobean... " which makes it sound like a right mess!

2024: A striking extension has been added to the right of this building.
