Monument

St George's Camberwell war memorial

Erection date: 19/9/1920

Inscription

{On the front of the plinth:}
To the memory of those who served 1914 - 1918.

{On the underneath of the figure's foot, or possibly on the stone on which his foot rests:}
Arild Rosenkrantz 1919

This sculptured face is remarkably modern, almost mask-like. The statue was stolen in August 1991 but was found 2 weeks later in a Brixton scrap-yard. Listed in 2017 this is now officially known as the Burgess Park War Memorial.

SE5, Wells Way, St George's Church

The church was designed by Francis Bedford in 1824. It closed in 1970 and become derelict. A serious fire in the 1980s destroyed the interior which meant it was suitable for conversion to private housing, with tenancies commencing in June 1994.

There is a ghost sign on the north side of the church, near the front.  Totally illegible to us, but it brought to mind the ghost sign about 'Mr Root' at Christ Church Spitalfields.
