Categories: Photography, Tragedy

Rachel Elizabeth Rackow was born on 5 July 1964, the youngest of the five children of Dr Francis Isidore Rackow (1922-2003) and Daphne Jean Rackow née Spittle (1928-2019). Her birth was registered in the Lambeth Registration District, London. Her four siblings were: Sara L. Rackow; Frances Patricia Alice Rackow (1956-2005); Chloe M. Rackow and Patrick Rackow. Electoral registers from 1961 and telephone directories to 1983 show her father listed at 19 Village Way, London, SE21.

A former model, working as a photographic agent, she died, aged 25 years, in August 1989, a victim of the Marchioness tragedy that took place on 20 August 1989..

She had been living with Julian Kent Tremain according to the IMS Vintage Photos website and they intended to get married. According to the East Dulwich forum website they had a joint funeral in the chapel at Dulwich Village, London, SE21.

Probate records confirm that they were both residing at 2 Ripon House, Manor Fields, London, SW15 but gives her date of death as 22 August 1989 which was two days after the tragedy. When administration of her estate was granted on 19 October 1989 her effects totalled £102,640. Her death was registered in May 1990 in the Tower Hamlets Registration District, Greater London.

She is shown as 'RACHEL RACKOW' on the tablet at the Marchioness Remembrance Memorial at Southwark Cathedral, but as 'RACHAEL RACKOW' on the plaque attached to a tree opposite 8 Red Post Hill, London, SE21.
