Andrew Behan has kindly carried out some research on this man:
Private Ernest Joseph Nessling. He was born on 31 August 1887 in Marylebone, the son of Lewis and Maria Nessling, née Cole. He was the youngest of their two sons and two daughters. His father was a Hot Water Fitter. He was baptised on 13 November 1887 at St Mary Church, Bryanston Square, Marylebone and the family were living at 102 East Street, Marylebone. The 1891 census shows the family living at 4 Harcourt Street, Marylebone and the 1901 census shows that by now his mother was widowed and the family were at 2 Seymour Place, Marylebone. The London Gazette of 3 May 1907 shows that he was appointed as a Postman in London. In October 1907 he was transferred to the Western District Office. The 1911 census shows the family were at 34 Woburn House, Homer Street, Marylebone and his occupation was still listed as a Postman. He joined the 13th Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, service number G/26176 and was killed in action on 31 August 1916, his 29th birthday. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier and Face 12 D and 13B of the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. On 27 October 1917 probate of his will was granted to his mother. His effects amounted to £222-1s-5d. His £2-3s-5d back pay was sent to her on 28 January 1918 and on 23 October 1919 she was awarded a War Gratuity of £3. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal.
