John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster

"Old John of Gaunt, time-honoured Lancaster" - first line in Shakespeare's Richard II. Fourth son of Edward III. Younger brother to the Black Prince. Uncle to Richard II. Born in Ghent. Lived at the Palace of the Savoy 1362 - 1381. Through his first wife's inheritance became the richest nobleman in England. His third wife was Chaucer's wife's sister. Powerful military leader. Died Leicester Castle, aged 59, so not really that old.
