Mick Rock

Categories: Music / songs, Photography

Michael David Rock was a photographer of rock acts in the 1970s.

Born Hammersmith possibly (records differ) with the surname Rock which would give him a serious case of nominative determinism. Other versions give his birth name as Michael Edward Chester Smith.

Whilst studying at Cambridge University he began photographing the local rock music scene. Moved to New York in the mid-1970s, where he died.

His photos of the July 1972 gigs at the King's Cross Cinema became the iconic album covers for Lou Reed's 1972 Transformer and Iggy & the Stooges' 1973 Raw Power.

At the source this photo is captioned: "Rock chronicler … Mick Rock at the reception for a Taschen book collecting his photographs of David Bowie, 9 September 2015. Photograph: Angela Weiss/Getty Images". Even at 67 he clearly enjoyed his allegiance to the counter-culture.
