Phineas Pett

Master Shipwright. Born at Deptford Strond (a parish in Deptford). First Resident Commissioner of Chatham Dockyard, he designed and built several ships including the 'Prince Royal' which he built in 1610. It was rebuilt by his son Peter in 1639-41, and rebuilt again In 1663 Sir Phineas Pett II, his grandson, we'd guess.

His son, Peter Pett (1610-1972) was a Master Shipwright and Second Resident Commissioner of Chatham Dockyard. Became Commissioner of Chatham Dockyard in 1648 but was dismissed in 1667 following the loss of many ships brought about by an attack on the Medway and the fleet at Chatham by the Dutch navy.

Wikipedia acknowledges that the Pett family is a morass of Peters and Phineases, all of whom built ships. If you, like us, get bogged down we recommend the Pett dynasty page, where the section 'Details of Pett families' summarises admirably.
