Richard Michael Renshaw was born in May 1950 in Holderness, Yorkshire, the second of the three children of Jack Newlove Renshaw (1920-1987) and Helen Rhead Renshaw née Moser (1917-2005). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1950 in the Holderness registration district, East Riding, Yorkshire. His two siblings are: Pamela Renshaw (b.1947) and John Renshaw (b.1952).

Electoral registers from 2004 show him listed at Pentwyn Farm, Cwmdu, Crickhowell, Powys, Wales, NP8 1RU and this address is confirmed in the Companies House Register where he listed as the director of The Farmers Arms Cwmdu Limited since 1 September 2019.
