Andrew Behan has researched Scattergood: Second Lieutenant Tom Victor Scattergood was born on 2 May 1887 in Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, Derbyshire a son of Joseph Thomas Scattergood and Elizabeth Scattergood, née Slater. His father was a Mineral Water Manufacturer. On 13 June 1887 he was baptised at the Parish Church of Newbold-cum-Stanton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire and the family were living at St Johns Road, Newbold. The 1891 census shows him still there. Between 1898 and 1901 he attended Chesterfield Grammar School, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield. By the time of the 1901 census he was residing with his married brother, William Henry Scattergood at Mountcastle Street, Newbold.
The 1911 census records him residing at a boarding house at 23 Clarendon Gardens, Maida Vale, Paddington and his occupation is shown as a Railway Clerk. In March 1915 he enlisted in the 28th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment, (Artists' Rifles), service number 3516 and entered France on 18 August 1915.
On 4 December 1915 he married Daisie Amy Courtenay-Russell at St Matthew's Parish Church, Chester Road, Stretford, Manchester, Lancashire. They gave their address as 'Breeze Hill', Urmston Lane, Stretford. His service number was changed to 760508 and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 21st (Service) Battalion (Tyneside Scottish) of the Northumberland Fusiliers on 5 January 1917.
He died of wounds, aged 30 years, on 6 June 1917 and was buried in Plot 6, Row F, Grave 35 in the Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France. Probate records show that his home address had become 97 Butler Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex and administration of his estate with a will was granted on 18 January 1918 to his brother-in-law, Jonathan Enoch Hill Allbut. His effects totalled £493-14s-8d. His army effects totalling £47-0s-10d were also sent to Jonathan E. H. Allbut on 8 March 1918, who also received his £10-0s-0d war gratuity on 12 May 1920. He was posthumously awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal. His name is also recorded on the World War 1 commemorative plaque in the entrance of the West Studio of Chesterfield College, Sheffield Road, Chesterfield.
